Life Rising Like a Climb

«Life moves forward like a climb.

You don’t notice it at first: the road is wide, your breath is steady, your legs respond. Then, meter by meter, the gradient shifts. It’s not an obstacle — it’s an invitation.

Today I put my bike back on the road to Monte Pellegrino, on the last morning of my forties. Palermo was already awake, the patronal feast in the air, the city breathing beneath me as I climbed.

A climb is this: a place where time is measured in heartbeats, in shadows stretching across the asphalt, in bends whose secrets you can’t see yet. Every switchback is a passing year, every harder stretch is a question you ask yourself, every gentler one is an answer arriving.

Halfway up I ran into friends, by chance. Life works like that: while you climb, it places someone beside you — someone who sees you, recognizes you, returns a fragment of who you are.

Reaching the top isn’t a finish line. It’s a threshold. It’s the moment you turn around, look at the city from above, and understand that the climb hasn’t taken anything from you — it has prepared you.

Tomorrow I turn fifty. Today I understood I’m not closing a decade: I’m opening a new gradient.»
