BIOGRAFIA
Nasco a Palermo nel 1976 e cresco in simbiosi con una Canon FX e un 50mm con cui mio papà ha documentato la storia della nostra famiglia (macchina che custodisco gelosamente e che porto in giro con medi tanto in tanto). È grazie a questa reflex analogica che inizio a “gattonare” nel mondo della fotografia e scopre la bellezza di scrivere con la luce sulla pellicola, la paziente attesa dello sviluppo e della stampa.
Passo alla reflex digitale nel 2013, ma è nel 2016 che approccio per la prima volta lo studio della fotografia partecipando ai primi eventi formativi che mi hanno fatto assumere maggiore consapevolezza della luce ma soprattutto del mio “occhio”, dandomi l’opportunità di sviluppare i miei gusti fotografici e ponendo le basi del mio attuale approccio alla fotografia e dei miei interessi verso la street photography e il reportage. È allora che inizio a esplorare e documentare il quotidiano – la strada – ma anche degli eventi tradizionali – religiosi e non della mia terra – la Sicilia – ispirandomi ai grandi maestri che li hanno narrati.
Nel 2018 lancio il sito www.oscarnicosia.com – onde raccogliervi i miei “storytellings” in affiancamento alla mia presenza sui social.
Nel 2019 mi classifico 2° nel contest “I Nostri Comuni: Viagrande” di Art’è Fotografia.
Nel 2023 arrivano le prime pubblicazioni: due mie foto vengono pubblicate su Vol.41 di “Docu Book: Best of Documentary & Street Photography” (periodico dell’editore finlandese DocuLabs) e una selezione di foto della mia serie fotografica “O Rosa Fulgida” – incentrata sul “400° Festino di Santa Rosalia” – viene pubblicata da “Scatto d’Uomo Magazine”.
Nello stesso anno arriva il mio primo importante successo: il 1° posto tra i partecipanti al set fotografico “Il Quartiere Ebraico” al 1° Photo Happening organizzato dall’Arvis di Palermo. Risultato ripetuto in occasione delle successive edizioni del Photo Happening (2024: 1° posto del set fotografico “Ritratto d’Artista: Zolletta” / 2025: 1° posto della foto “The Vortex of The Rose” nelle letture della categoria “Foto Singole”.
La fotografia è sempre in divenire e in fase di sperimentazione: dal 2023 riscopro l’analogico estendendo il mio bagaglio allo sviluppo, alla stampa in camera oscura e alle antiche tecniche di stampa (in particolare la cianotipia).
BIOGRAPHY
I was born in Palermo in 1976 and grew up in symbiosis with a Canon FX and a 50mm lens with which my father documented our family’s story (a camera I cherish and still take out with me from time to time). It was thanks to this analog reflex that I began to “crawl” into the world of photography and discovered the beauty of writing with light on film, along with the patient wait for developing and printing.
I switched to a digital reflex in 2013, but it was in 2016 that I approached photography as a subject of study for the first time, taking part in my first educational events. These experiences heightened my awareness of light and, above all, of my own “eye”, giving me the opportunity to develop my photographic tastes and laying the foundation for my current approach to photography and my interests in street photography and reportage. That’s when I began exploring and documenting everyday life – the street – as well as traditional events, both religious and secular, of my homeland, Sicily, inspired by the masters who portrayed it.
In 2018 I launched www.oscarnicosia.com, my website, to collect my “storytellings” alongside my social media presence.
In 2019 I placed 2nd in the contest I Nostri Comuni: Viagrande” by Art’è Fotografia.
In 2023 came my first publications: two of my photos were included in Vol. 41 of “Docu Book: Best of Documentary & Street Photography” (a periodical by the Finnish publisher DocuLabs), and a selection of images from my photographic series “O Rosa Fulgida” – focused on the “400th Festino of Santa Rosalia”— was published by “Scatto d’Uomo Magazine”.
In the same year came my first significant achievement: 1st place among the participants in the photo set “The Jewish Quarter” at the 1st Photo Happening organized by Arvis in Palermo. I repeated this result in the following editions of the Photo Happening (2024: 1st place in the photo set “Portrait of an Artist: Zolletta” / 2025: 1st place with the photo “The Vortex of The Rose” in the portfolio reviews for the “Single Photos” category).
Photography is always evolving and in constant experimentation: since 2023 I have returned to analog, expanding my skill set to include film development, darkroom printing, and ancient printing techniques (particularly cyanotype).
